SHUQIAO ZHOU

Shuqiao Zhou was born in China and immigrated to the United States under a visiting scholar program to the Los Angeles area. He graduated from Guangzhou Fine Art Institute and worked at Guangzhou Art Academy as a Professor of Creative Art, Oil Department Chair and Academy Vice President. During those years he worked on large portraits of national leaders for many Chinese cities, the provincial government, and communities. In addition, twice a year, he created large posters for the plaza in Guangzhou City. Each year from 1968 to 1972 he was selected to participate in the China Export Commodities Fair, as well as the creative painting group of the National Revolution History Museum, and the Guangzhou City Museum. From 1981 to 1984, he created large murals for the great houses in the open cities of southern China. On ten different occasions his paintings were selected for major national art exhibitions, and his works have been exhibited in several other countries including Romania, Yugoslavia, Albania, Thailand, Canada and the United States. He has also exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York as part of an international exhibition.

A master of genre painting, his painting are in the permanent collections of China’s Revolution History Museum and China’s Fine Art Gallery, both in Beijing, as well as the permanent collection of Occidental College in Los Angeles. His many awards include the 1997 American National Award of Excellence for Best of Show in the Oil Painters of America Sixth Annual Exhibition in Taos, New Mexico and the 2001 “Museum Acquisition Award” from the California Art Club’s 91st Annual Gold Medal Exhibition in Pasadena, California. He has also received the “Merit Award” at the Salon International held in San Antonia in 2002 and an “Award of Excellence” from the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition in April of 2002. Shuqiao Zhou is a member of China’s National Association of Artists, and a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America and of the California Art Club.
